Wednesday 6/1/1981: Stewart (TOR) and Blanco (NYM) win monthly pitcher award
The best month of May in the American League certainly had Toronto's right-hander Dave Stewart, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 5-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 45.2 innings of work he allowed just 45 hits while striking out 22, compiling an ERA of just 2.96. Dave pitched a shutout as well. In 11 starts this year Dave struck out 41 batters in 83.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.23, his record 6-3. Dave has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 8th in the American League in wins! Gil Blanco couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the left-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 2-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.56. He struck out 11 in 16 innings. Gil also fired a shutout. Gil has a record of 5-2 this season, with an ERA of 3.33. Wednesday 6/1/1981: Philadelphia's Schmidt named Batter of the Month
It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Boston's centerfielder Fred Lynn. In 96 at bats he hit .396 with 3 HR and 17 RBI. Lynn has hit 4 homeruns this year while batting .340. He adds 13 doubles, along with 36 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in batting! Mike Schmidt of Philadelphia wins his 3rd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Mike pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .330 with 13 and 34 RBI while slugging .796. His season features a batting average of .279 (51 hits in 183 AB), 15 doubles, no triples and 18 homeruns. Schmidt collected 48 RBI and 40 runs as well. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Monday 5/30/1981: Houston's Rivers wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Steve McCatty this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. McCatty was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.72. Along the way he struck out 4 in 15.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 3.94 helped him to a 4-6 record this year. He struck out 22 and walked 45 in 82.1 innings. Steve has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Mickey Rivers, Houston's starting centerfielder. He hit .417 with 7 RBI and slugged .875 in 24 at bats. His season features a batting average of .254 (49 hits in 193 AB), 12 doubles, 3 triples and 6 longballs. Rivers collected 29 RBI and 25 runs as well.
Saturday 5/28/1981: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by J.R. Richard
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's right-hander J.R. Richard is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 17th time he has done it in his career. Richard (7-2) struck out 9 and issued 1 BB, throwing 78 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Mike Easler helped Richard at the plate, he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, doubling once. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Thursday 5/26/1981: Dave Hamilton quiets Minnesota bats with shutout
MINNESOTA - Dave Hamilton had his best stuff going, and Minnesota hitters had nothing to cheer about. Toronto's southpaw pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Hamilton (1-0) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 59 of 93 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Bobby Tolan provided Toronto with the offense Hamilton needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. Toronto improved its record to 23-27, scoring 4 runs on 11 hits.
