Tuesday 7/19/1981: Lance Parrish punishes Cleveland with three dingers
CLEVELAND - Lance Parrish can hit'em a long way, and Cleveland pitchers couldn't smile about that today. Oakland's catcher unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Manny Sarmiento in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 340 feet from home plate. Number 2 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 366 feet, cleared the wall in left field. In the 9th inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Jerry Reed. Lance finished with 5 hits in 6 AB, hitting a double, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 6 RBI. Oakland scored 16 runs on 25 hits.
Monday 7/18/1981: Concepcion (TOR) and Gullett (SFG) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Toronto's shortstop Dave Concepcion. Dave pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .538 with 3 HR and 12 RBI while slugging .962. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's pitcher Don Gullett. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 20 starts this year Don struck out 53 batters in 145.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.61, his record 12-2. He has 8 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Friday 7/15/1981: Fred Klages blanks Pittsburgh with a 1-hitter
PITTSBURGH - Age doesn't matter. At least Philadelphia's right-hander Fred Klages shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against Pittsburgh, recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Klages (5-4) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 64 of 102 pitches for strikes. Brian Downing provided Philadelphia with the offense Klages needed as he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate. Philadelphia improved its record to 55-37, scoring 3 runs on 8 hits.
Wednesday 7/13/1981: Dave Cash punishes Pittsburgh with seven hits
PITTSBURGH - On Wednesday, Philadelphia's shortstop Dave Cash displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Pittsburgh, punishing their pitchers with seven hits. A pitch from Alan Wirth in the 2nd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 366 feet from home plate in right field. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 3rd , in the 5th inning , in the 6th inning , in the 7th and in the 9th . Dave scored 4 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .349. The final score of the game was 20-5.
Wednesday 7/13/1981: Jack Dilauro shuts out Kansas City on 2 hits
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's lefty Jack Dilauro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 47th time he has done it in his career. Dilauro (7-4) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 111 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Minnesota's shortstop Willie Randolph got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Dilauro. Minnesota scored 10 runs on 12 hits.
