Monday 8/22/1981: Jack Clark collects five hits against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Jack Clark is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st hit, a GRAND SLAM off Wally Bunker in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 415 feet from home plate. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Charlie Vaughan. His 5th cleared the based, a three-run double off Hal Dues in the 9th inning. He had singles in the 3rd inning (one RBI) and in the 6th . Jack scored 2 runs, and he collected 8 RBI as well! He now has a total of 114 hits this season, accounting for a .265 batting average. St. Louis scored 23 runs on 21 hits.
Monday 8/22/1981: Player of the Week honors go to Yazawa and Scott
Kenichi Yazawa wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Kenichi was on fire, hitting .455 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. George C. Scott from San Diego wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .462, while driving in 11 runs.
Thursday 8/18/1981: Jack Morris pitches 1-hit shutout against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Philadelphia's right-hander Jack Morris is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (N) on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Morris (13-4) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 64 of 98 pitches for strikes. Dan Driessen helped Morris at the plate, he finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and driving in 5 runs. Philadelphia improved its record to 74-46, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits.
