PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's rightfielder Harold Baines will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Baines had suffered a Torn Thigh Muscle. Baines has walked 60 times this year and posts a .317 OBP. While batting .236, 123 for 522, he has driven in 43 runs.
Tuesday 9/13/1981: Milwaukee's Reuss severely injured
MILWAUKEE - When it rains, it pours. Milwaukee's southpaw Jerry Reuss will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 5th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Spasms Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Jerry has a record of 6-9 this season, with an ERA of 3.28. In 211.1 Innings he was able to strike out 132 batters. Jerry has pitched one shutout and 4 complete games.
Monday 9/12/1981: Ozzie Virgil Jr. (NYM) will miss 5 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s catcher Ozzie Virgil Jr. will miss about 5 weeks after being knocked unconscious in a collision at home plate, in the 1st inning of the game between New York (N) and Chicago (N). He was helped off the field after the incident. Virgil Jr. will miss at least 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Hand. He has hit 11 taters while batting .260 this season. His 105 hits and 49 walks add up to a .349 on-base percentage.
Monday 9/12/1981: Ryan and Madlock win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Nolan Ryan, one of California's best starting pitchers. Nolan went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 15 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Ryan compiled an ERA of 2.71, going 16-13 in 33 starts. He fanned 193 while giving up 201 hits in 269 innings. Nolan has pitched 3 shutouts and 13 complete games. He's 7th in the American League in ERA and 7th in wins! Bill Madlock wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Bill pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .448 with 3 HR and 10 RBI while slugging .897. He has hit 26 taters while batting .293 this season. His 175 hits and 54 walks add up to a .353 on-base percentage. He's 9th in the National League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 6th in RBI!

TEXAS - Texas is without its ace Paul Splittorff for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Joe Rudi in a game against Boston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Splittorff was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Tricep Muscle. Paul has a record of 6-12 this season, with an ERA of 4.97. In 154 Innings he was able to strike out 59 batters.
Friday 9/9/1981: Don Gullett dominates Houston, throws NO-HITTER
HOUSTON - San Francisco's lefty Don Gullett is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Houston on no hits. Gullett (19-2) fanned 2 and walked 2, throwing 120 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' San Francisco's shortstop Lou Whitaker stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gullett. The final score of the game was 2-0.
