PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's right-hander Tom Hausman is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. Hausman (17-6) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 88 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Richie Hebner helped Hausman at the plate, he went 1 for 5, doubling once, with 2 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 106-46, scoring 6 runs on 9 hits.
Tuesday 9/20/1981: Craig Swan blanks Cleveland with a 1-hitter
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Craig Swan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 20th time he has done it in his career. Swan (15-9) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' The hitting star for Chicago (A) was rightfielder Jimmy McMath, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Chicago (A) scored 3 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 9/19/1981: Rogodzinski and Morgan win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Rogodzinski, Chicago (A)'s starting centerfielder. In 24 at bats he hit .500 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. Rogodzinski has walked 54 times this year and posts a .326 OBP. While batting .266, 148 for 556, he has driven in 102 runs. The National League's best player of the week was San Francisco's Joe L. Morgan, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Morgan helped his team with an average of .462 and 4 RBI in 26 at bats.
Saturday 9/17/1981: Jim Bethke shuts out Atlanta on one hit
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Jim Bethke is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Atlanta found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Bethke 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 22nd shutouts in his career. Bethke (14-8) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Dickie Thon helped Bethke at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, stroking a double. The final score of the game was 1-0.
