Jerry Augustine of New York (A) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Jerry went 3-0 with an ERA of 2.28, while fanning 13 in 23.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Houston's catcher Johnny Bench had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 20 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Sunday 4/17/1982: Cliff Johnson collects 2000th hit against Oakland
OAKLAND - Cliff Johnson got a standing ovation from 28489 fans in Oakland, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1980 where he hit .357 with 26 homeruns and 124 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' He hit a single in the 9th off Jeff Reardon for number 2000.
Thursday 4/14/1982: Jon Matlack quiets Philadelphia bats with shutout
PHILADELPHIA - Jon Matlack had his best stuff going, and Philadelphia hitters had nothing to cheer about. Atlanta's lefty pitched a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Matlack (1-2) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 105 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Reggie Jackson provided Atlanta with the offense Matlack needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. Atlanta scored 2 runs on 6 hits.

Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Joe Charboneau had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. MONTREAL - Atlanta's centerfielder Dale Murphy flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 10-0 win over Montreal. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Danny Darwin in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in right field. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Danny Darwin in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 451 feet from home plate. A pitch from Steve J. Kline in the 9th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 454 feet from home plate in center field. Dale stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring FOUR runs and collecting 6 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 4-3, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits.

His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Haas was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Back Muscle.

CHICAGO (N) - St. Louis' John Montefusco drilled Chicago (N)'s shortstop Roy Smalley III in the 2nd inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Roy Smalley III will miss at least 5 weeks. Broken Finger was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials.

BALTIMORE - Baltimore's catcher Rick Dempsey will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. Baltimore wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Dempsey had suffered a Fractured Hip.

CALIFORNIA - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Nolan Ryan did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Texas. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Ryan (1-0) struck out 2 and issued 5 BB, throwing 64 of 109 pitches for strikes. California's catcher Vic Correll finished 1 for 4, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI.
