Monday 4/25/1982: Johnson and Virgil Jr. win Player of the Week award
Chicago (A)'s third baseman Cliff Johnson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Cliff was on fire, hitting .773 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. His season numbers are: .468 AVG, 37 hits, 9 doubles, one triple and 3 taters, along with 22 RBI and 13 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 3rd in RBI! New York (N)'s catcher Ozzie Virgil Jr. had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .500 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.278 in 18 at bats.
Saturday 4/23/1982: Bruce Hurst pitches his 1st shutout of the season
PITTSBURGH - Montreal's left-hander Bruce Hurst will never forget this day. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Pittsburgh on Saturday. Hurst (1-2) struck out 9 and issued 3 BB, throwing 66 of 108 pitches for strikes. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Ben Oglivie helped Hurst at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Montreal scored 7 runs on 12 hits.
Friday 4/22/1982: Pittsburgh's Bunker severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its right-hander Wally Bunker for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Terry Hughes in a game against Montreal. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. Opposing players hit .338 against Wally this season. While posting an ERA of 8.50 he went 0-3 in 4 starts, fanning 10 and walking 8 hitters.
