The new Montreal Expos general manager Matt Ward, with support from the ownership, have made changes to the current ballpark. The fences and wall heights are changed to better suit the current roster and prospects that are in the pipeline. The commissioner’s office has allowed a one time exception with regards to the changes. Given that the new general manager and ownership wanted to create a new culture of winning, the commissioner was willing to allow the construction. The Expos haven’t surpassed the 75 win total in there brief history and have yet to finish above second place.
The new fence length and fence heights are big change from the current dimensions. The centerfield fence is proposed to be 440 ft from home plate - matching the Giants, Orioles, and White Sox ballparks as one of the biggest CFs in the league. It brings to mind the old Comiskey Park with its spacious dimensions.
When asked for comment on the new field dimensions, new general manager Matt Ward answered “We have a good, young pitching staff that we thought would we would like to build around,” the Expos have four of the five starting pitchers under twenty seven years old. The general manager continued, “ the current dimensions weren’t really conducive to what we’re trying to build here. There’s a lot of hitters park in this league, we’re going the other way.”
The Montreal Expos also plan to move the AAA team closer to Montreal at the end of the season. The current team is in Denver.
