It's the 7th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s centerfielder Jim Dwyer. He had an on base percentage of .667 and hit .600, while driving in 9 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! His season numbers are: .424 AVG, 39 hits, 4 doubles, one triple and 5 taters, along with 27 RBI and 26 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 2nd in RBI! New York (N)'s second baseman Johnny Ray had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .583 and hit .526, while driving in 6 runs. Ray has hit one tater this year while batting .261. He adds 4 doubles, along with 12 runs scored.
Sunday 5/1/1982: Johnny Ray uncorks cycle hits against Houston
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s second baseman Johnny Ray once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Houston's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Sunday. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Steve Busby in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 412 feet from home plate. It tied the ballgame at 1. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Steve Busby. A single in the 7th off Bob Owchinko accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from Rick Steirer in the 10th inning left his bat for a two-run triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Johnny scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .261 this season, with 1 HR and 11 RBI. He's now the 56th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Joe L. Morgan was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 10/5/1981.
Sunday 5/1/1982: Mike Flanagan blanks Detroit with a 2-hitter
CLEVELAND - Great days are rare. But not for Cleveland's lefty Mike Flanagan. Detroit found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 15th time he has done it in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Flanagan (4-1) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 69 of 109 pitches for strikes. Richie Zisk provided Cleveland with the offense Flanagan needed as he got 2 hits in 3 AB, blasting a homerun. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Sunday 5/1/1982: Reynolds (TOR) and Sutton (LAN) win monthly pitcher award
Toronto's Bob Reynolds had a terrific April, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.57 in 46 innings of work in which he struck out 32 hitters. His record in April is 4-0. Bob also fired a shutout. Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Don Sutton is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He had an ERA of just 0.94 in 48 innings of work in which he struck out 34 hitters. His record in April is 4-0. Don pitched a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1982: Chicago (A)'s Johnson earns Batter of the Month award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s third baseman Cliff Johnson. Cliff was on fire, hitting .416 with 3 homeruns and 25 RBI. Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman Ron Cey had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. In 93 at bats he hit .344 with 6 HR and 27 RBI.
Friday 4/29/1982: Don Gullett pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CHICAGO (N) - Don Gullett took the mound and never left. And Chicago (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. San Francisco's lefty gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 27 career shutouts in 265 games started. Gullett (4-3) struck out 4 and walked 3, throwing 56 of 98 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Eddie Murray provided San Francisco with the offense Gullett needed as he finished 4 for 5. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Thursday 4/28/1982: St. Louis' Crawford severely injured
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' centerfielder Willie Crawford suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Hip which will require surgery. His season features a batting average of .283 (17 hits in 60 AB), 4 doubles, one triple and one tater. Crawford collected 12 RBI and 4 runs as well.
Thursday 4/28/1982: Montreal's Hughes severely injured
MONTREAL - Montreal's second baseman Terry Hughes will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Montreal and Cincinnati. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Hughes collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Knee. Surgery will be performed next week. His season features a batting average of .250 (20 hits in 80 AB), 6 doubles, one triple and no bombs. Hughes collected 6 RBI and 13 runs as well.
Wednesday 4/27/1982: Kansas City's Lowenstein severely injured
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's players were scared when they had to watch John Lowenstein suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Oakland. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Lowenstein will probaby miss 7-8 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Lowenstein was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Wrist. Lowenstein has walked 9 times this year and posts a .347 OBP. While batting .242, 15 for 62, he has driven in 2 runs.
Monday 4/25/1982: Cincinnati has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Jim Bibby
CINCINNATI - Age doesn't matter. At least Philadelphia's right-hander Jim Bibby shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a no-hitter against Cincinnati, showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Bibby (2-1) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 65 of 94 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Philadelphia was third baseman Mike Schmidt, he went 2 for 4, homering once, with 2 RBI. Philadelphia scored 3 runs on 6 hits.

NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Scott Sanderson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Sanderson (3-2) struck out 8 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 96 pitches for strikes. Ron Kittle helped Sanderson at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, doubling once.
