The National League's best player of the week was Chicago (N)'s Cecil Cooper, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. He hit .417 with 8 RBI and slugged .750 in 24 at bats. Friday 5/20/1982: New York (A)'s Wills severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. New York (A)'s shortstop Bump Wills will miss about 7-8 weeks after being hit by Roy Lee Jackson in the 3rd inning of the game between New York (A) and Chicago (A). Wills was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Cheekbone. He has hit one longball while batting .203 this season. His 12 hits and 1 walks add up to a .234 on-base percentage.
Thursday 5/19/1982: Rod Carew has 3000th career hits
HOUSTON - Montreal's players had every reason to congratulate Rod Carew, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 3000th career hit! Along with his 3000 hits, Rod collected 107 homeruns and 984 RBI in 17 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Bob Owchinko. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.

SEATTLE - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Richie Zisk after his 5 hit game, which Cleveland won 10-7 against Seattle. A pitch from Bob Welch in the 6th inning left his bat for a double. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Bob Welch in the 7th inning.
