It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's rightfielder Richie Zisk. Richie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .893. The National League's best player of the week was Chicago (N)'s Cecil Cooper, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. He hit .417 with 8 RBI and slugged .750 in 24 at bats. His season numbers are: .323 AVG, 54 hits, 20 doubles, no triples and 5 homeruns, along with 26 RBI and 22 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Friday 5/20/1982: New York (A)'s Wills severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. New York (A)'s shortstop Bump Wills will miss about 7-8 weeks after being hit by Roy Lee Jackson in the 3rd inning of the game between New York (A) and Chicago (A). Wills was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Cheekbone. He has hit one longball while batting .203 this season. His 12 hits and 1 walks add up to a .234 on-base percentage.
Thursday 5/19/1982: Rod Carew has 3000th career hits
HOUSTON - Montreal's players had every reason to congratulate Rod Carew, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 3000th career hit! Along with his 3000 hits, Rod collected 107 homeruns and 984 RBI in 17 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Bob Owchinko. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.

SEATTLE - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Richie Zisk after his 5 hit game, which Cleveland won 10-7 against Seattle. A pitch from Bob Welch in the 6th inning left his bat for a double. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Bob Welch in the 7th inning. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Bill Dancy in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left field. He had singles in the 2nd (one RBI) and in the 4th . Richie did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .293 this season, with 6 HR and 27 RBI.
Monday 5/16/1982: Seattle's Knight wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Seattle's Ray Knight, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Ray went 17 for 28 (.607), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 11 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .427, Ray hit .403 and slugged .584. He has collected 28 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the American League in batting! In the 7th of the game against Minnesota he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Rodriguez was examined by specialists.
