Wednesday 6/1/1982: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Detroit's pitcher Rob Dressler is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in May. He had an ERA of just 1.77 in 40.2 innings of work in which he struck out 27 hitters. His record in May is 4-1. Opposing players hit .273 against Rob this season. While posting an ERA of 2.77 he went 7-2 in 11 starts, fanning 39 and walking 17 hitters. He's 2nd in the American League in wins! Detroit's pitcher John Fulgham is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in May. He had an ERA of just 1.20 in 45 innings of work in which he struck out 17 hitters. His record in May is 5-0. John got two complete game shutouts as well! New York (A)'s designated hitter Gorman Thomas had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He hit .404 with 24 RBI and slugged .646 in 99 at bats. Gorman has gone 76 for 195 (.390) this season, hitting 12 bombs and driving in 43 runs. He has scored 40 runs on his own. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was San Francisco's Lee Mazzilli, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Mazzilli helped his team with an average of .400 and 25 RBI in 95 at bats. Mazzilli has walked 32 times this year and posts a .436 OBP. While batting .351, 67 for 191, he has driven in 35 runs. He's 2nd in the National League in batting and 6th in RBI!
Monday 5/30/1982: Atlanta's Jackson wins Player of the Week award
George Foster wins his 7th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Foster helped his team with an average of .478 and 8 RBI in 23 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Reggie Jackson, who wins the award for the 11th time in his career. In 24 at bats he hit .417 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. His season features a batting average of .253 (47 hits in 186 AB), 5 doubles, no triples and 14 bombs. Jackson collected 31 RBI and 29 runs as well.
Friday 5/27/1982: Rick Reuschel out for 5 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston is without its ace Rick Reuschel for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bill Sharp in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Tricep Tendon which will require surgery. Rick has a record of 4-1 this season, with an ERA of 2.56. In 70.1 Innings he was able to strike out 32 batters. Rick has pitched 3 shutouts and 4 complete games.
Thursday 5/26/1982: Mike Norris (PHI) will miss full season
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Mike Norris experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against New York (N), Norris complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Norris was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle. In 10 starts this year Mike struck out 44 batters in 66 innings of work. His ERA is 3.41, his record 4-2.
Thursday 5/26/1982: Toronto's Reynolds out for 8 weeks
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's ace Bob Reynolds will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against California where he left the field in the 8th inning. Reynolds was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Herniated Disc Back. His ERA of 1.90 helped him to a 5-2 record this year. He struck out 56 and walked 19 in 80.1 innings. Bob has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
