Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is New York (A)'s Dave S. Smith. He went 3-0 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 0.90. He struck out 9 in 20 innings. His ERA of 1.95 helped him to a 7-1 record this year. He struck out 38 and walked 10 in 64.2 innings. Don Gullett pitched like a legend in June, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 0.77 in 35 innings of work in which he struck out 19 hitters. His record in June is 4-0. This season Gullett compiled an ERA of 1.68, going 11-5 in 18 starts. New York (A)'s centerfielder Jim Dwyer had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Dwyer helped his team with an average of .350 and 25 RBI in 100 at bats. His season features a batting average of .340 (99 hits in 291 AB), 13 doubles, 2 triples and 16 bombs. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Bill Madlock, San Diego's starting third baseman. Bill pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .652 with 1 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .913. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. His season numbers are: .403 AVG, 98 hits, 13 doubles, one triple and 11 homeruns, along with 49 RBI and 43 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 4th in RBI!
Sunday 6/26/1982: George Brett punishes Cleveland with four hits, cycle
KANSAS CITY - George Brett led Kansas City to a 9-7 win over Cleveland by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A triple off Mark Fidrych in the 1st inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 2nd off Mark Fidrych accounted for his 2nd hit. A 371 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Oil Can Boyd in the 5th inning. Number 4 in the 6th inning accounted for a RBI double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! George scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 82 hits in 269 at bats, resulting in a .305 batting average. He becomes the 57th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Johnny Ray was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/1/1982.
Friday 6/24/1982: San Diego's Fingers severely injured
SAN DIEGO - When it rains, it pours. San Diego's right-hander Rollie Fingers will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 9th inning. Fingers was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Tricep Muscle. Rollie has a record of 1-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.67. In 34.1 Innings he was able to strike out 26 batters.
Thursday 6/23/1982: Paul Splittorff (TEX) will miss 6 weeks
TEXAS - Texas is without its lefty Paul Splittorff for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jack Brohamer in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 5.17 helped him to a 2-10 record this year. He struck out 46 and walked 46 in 92.1 innings.
