Monday 7/11/1982: J.R. Richard pitches 2-hit shutout against Philadelphia
SAN FRANCISCO - J.R. Richard took the mound and never left. And Philadelphia hitters couldn't touch him at all. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 325 games started. Richard (15-2) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 108 pitches. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Eddie Murray provided San Francisco with the offense Richard needed as he went 1 for 2, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. San Francisco improved its record to 55-33, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 7/11/1982: Player of the Week honors go to Dawson and Seaver
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's rightfielder Andre Dawson. Dawson helped his team with an average of .423 and 12 RBI in 26 at bats. Andre managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Tom Seaver, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. Seaver was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Tom Seaver is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Seaver 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 63rd shutouts in his career. Terry Whitfield spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with one out in the 8th inning. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Seaver (11-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. Atlanta's rightfielder Gene Richards went 1 for 4, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Seaver. Atlanta improved its record to 56-31, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Tom Seaver gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Seaver allowed 0 earned runs while striking out 3 and walking 0 in 9 innings of work. His career features a 2.53 ERA, along with 3628 K's in 4603 innings. He has won 20 games 6 times in his career, setting a career high with 25 wins in 1975. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
Thursday 7/7/1982: Baltimore's May out for 5-6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's first baseman Carlos May will miss at least 5-6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. May has hit 8 homeruns this year while batting .246. He adds 15 doubles, along with 45 runs scored.
Tuesday 7/5/1982: Seattle's Harper out for 4-5 weeks
SEATTLE - Seattle's leftfielder Terry Harper suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Detroit's Scott McGregor. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Harper will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Finger. Harper has walked 34 times this year and posts a .379 OBP. While batting .303, 88 for 290, he has driven in 40 runs.
