The Dodgers had multiple All-Stars this season for the first time since '78. After being shut out of the mid-summer classic in '79 and '80 the Dodgers had a single representative last season - center fielder Larry Hisle. This year 3 players represented the Dodgers organization.
Newcomers Don Sutton and Ron Cey - both signed as free agents this past offseason - as well as homegrown closer Tom Henke were the Dodgers selections.
Don Sutton was selected on the strength of an 8-2 record with a 1.73 ERA, .169 opponents average, and 0.75 WHIP in 16 starts. He had 87 strikeouts vs 20 walks in 124.2 first half innings.
Ron Cey entered the game with a .281 avg, .399 obp and .452 slg for an .852 ops. He had 18 doubles, 9 HR, 51 RBI, 49 R and 55 BB vs 44 K to go along with 1 steal AMD solid defense at the hot corner over 263 AB's spanning 79 games.
The young fireballer Tom Henke has clearly taken to the closets role after a year spent in relief. He was 5-3 with 23 saves in 24 chances - a 96% conversion rate - to go along with a 2.08 ERA, .193 opponents average and 0.99 WHIP in 47.2 innings. Tom had 37 strikeouts vs 15 walks in 40 games.
Ron Cey pinch hit for Bill Madlock and went 1-1 with 2 RBI's of the NL's 5 runs. Don Sutton started the game for the senior circuit and threw 3 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. Tom Henke collected the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief allowing just 1 hit and 1 strikeout when the NL scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 9th.
Don Sutton collected the All-Star game MVP award - the 2nd consecutive year a Dodger has taken home the award after Larry Hisle won last year's award.
Congratulations to the deserving trio.
