SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's leftfielder Jeffrey Leonard will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between San Francisco and New York (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Leonard collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. San Francisco wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Leonard had suffered a Ruptured Medial Collateral Ligament. Jeffrey has gone 124 for 468 (.265) this season, hitting 22 taters and driving in 82 runs. He has scored 73 runs on his own. He's 4th in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Tuesday 8/23/1982: Dick Ruthven out for 5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's pitcher Dick Ruthven was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 7th inning of the game between California and Cleveland. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Ruthven will miss about 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Hand which will require surgery. Dick has a record of 11-4 this season, with an ERA of 3.09. In 175 Innings he was able to strike out 48 batters.
Tuesday 8/23/1982: Kansas City's Stone severely injured
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's lefty George H. Stone suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Texas he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Kansas City wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Stone had suffered a Strained Back Muscle. In 25 starts this year George H. struck out 69 batters in 146.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.30, his record 11-7.
Monday 8/22/1982: Mayberry Sr. and Arroyo win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to John Mayberry Sr., Kansas City's starting first baseman. Mayberry Sr. helped his team with an average of .542 and 8 RBI in 24 at bats. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Houston's pitcher Fernando Arroyo. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Friday 8/19/1982: Jerry Reed (CLE) will miss 5 weeks
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Jerry Reed suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Chicago (A) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.77 helped him to a 3-5 record this year. He struck out 14 and walked 30 in 59.2 innings.
Thursday 8/18/1982: Houston's Steve Garvey laces 2000th career hit
HOUSTON - Houston's players had every reason to congratulate Steve Garvey, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 6th inning, Steve drilled a two run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 13 years of big league action so far, Steve has compiled a batting average of .267, along with 305 homeruns and 1224 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
