On September 6th, as best I can tell, LA received a bit of bad news as the club was I formed by trainers that third baseman Ron Cey suffered a broken foot. The news came as a surprise to the team since it was not listed in the league breaking news, general news, or on the players history page. The initial diagnosis set a 7-8 week expected recovery time period, making it very unlikely that he could return before the season is complete.
Had this happened 5 weeks earlier the club would have promoted prospect Tim Wallach and the future would have become the present. However, Cey's strong campaign had club executives discussing a potential return to the club for the third baseman and Wallach was dealt to Montreal for help further down the road. Cey's future is now up in the air.
Instead, Otto Velez has been moved back to 3B which will create full time openings for Willie Montanez and another spot which is likely to be split between Ty Waller, Rick Manning, and Rick Down. The club is off to a 6-2 start with this new alignment.
If this is indeed the end of Cey's time in LA, he will finish with a line of .289, .404, .419 for a new career high OPS of .823 with 131 hits, 26 2B, 11 HR, 79 RBI, 75 R, 90 BB and 76 K in 453 AB's spanning 133 games with a .972 F% at the hot corner. That production resulted in his only All-Star game selection to date.
