Monday 9/26/1982: Johnny Bench collects 2000th hit against San Diego
HOUSTON - Houston's players had every reason to congratulate Johnny Bench, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1969 where he hit .311 with 22 homeruns and 97 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' He hit a single in the 1st off Mike Corkins for number 2000.
Monday 9/26/1982: San Francisco's Tolan wins Player of the Week award
Don Mattingly from New York (A) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Mattingly helped his team with an average of .560 and 9 RBI in 25 at bats. Bobby Tolan wins his 6th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Tolan helped his team with an average of .520 and 5 RBI in 25 at bats. This year Tolan drove in 40 and scored 38 runs while batting .253 with 7 homeruns.
Sunday 9/25/1982: Tom Hausman shuts out Pittsburgh on one hit
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's right-hander Tom Hausman is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Hausman (11-8) struck out none and issued 2 BB, throwing 66 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Atlanta's catcher Steve Yeager finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hausman. The final score of the game was 7-0.
