The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Kansas City's George Brett this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Brett helped his team with an average of .429 and 9 RBI in 28 at bats. Brett has hit 4 taters this year while batting .351. He adds 8 doubles, along with 18 runs scored. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Max Venable. Wednesday 4/13/1983: Bob Welch quiets Kansas City bats with shutout
KANSAS CITY - Great days are rare. But not for Seattle's right-hander Bob Welch. Kansas City found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Welch (2-0) did not have perfect control, walking 7. He struck out none. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' The hitting star for Seattle was first baseman Ray Knight, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, doubling twice, and collecting 2 RBI. Seattle scored 4 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 4/11/1983: Atlanta's Matlack wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s catcher Darrell Porter. Darrell was on fire, hitting .556 with 5 HR and 11 RBI. Jon Matlack of Atlanta wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Jon went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.55, while fanning 14 in 16.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 4/10/1983: Darrell Porter socks five hits for New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - On Sunday, New York (A)'s catcher Darrell Porter displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Baltimore, punishing their pitchers with five hits. Number 3 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 334 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 5th hit, off Enrique Romo in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. He collected singles in the 2nd , in the 3rd and in the 6th inning (one RBI). Darrell did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .516. The final score of the game was 12-3.
Thursday 4/7/1983: Houston's Reuschel out for 5 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston is without its right-hander Rick Reuschel for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Gary Gray in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Torn Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials.
Monday 4/4/1983: Andy McGaffigan (PIT) will miss 8 weeks
PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's right-hander Andy McGaffigan will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 5th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Herniated Disc Back which will require surgery.
Monday 4/4/1983: LaMarr Hoyt pitches his 1st shutout of the season
MONTREAL - Montreal's LaMarr Hoyt overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Philadelphia had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Hoyt (1-0) fanned 4 and walked 3, throwing 128 pitches. Montreal's third baseman Tim Wallach got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hoyt. The final score of the game was 5-0.

A pitch from Gary Nolan in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 432 feet from home plate in center field. In the 6th inning he belted a double off Juan Agosto.
