ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Harry Parker is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Cincinnati on no hits. Terry Kennedy spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 7th inning. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Parker (5-1) struck out 5 and issued 3 BB, throwing 57 of 103 pitches for strikes. St. Louis' second baseman Rance Mulliniks collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Parker. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Tuesday 5/24/1983: Paul Moskau (MIL) will miss 6 weeks
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee is without its right-hander Paul Moskau for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Gary Alexander in a game against Toronto. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Moskau was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Bicep Muscle. Paul has a record of 6-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.11. In 64 Innings he was able to strike out 43 batters. He's 6th in the American League in ERA and 4th in wins!
Monday 5/23/1983: Mattingly and Matlack win Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s first baseman Don Mattingly. In 25 at bats he hit .520 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's pitcher Jon Matlack. Matlack was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 20 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts!
Thursday 5/19/1983: Pittsburgh has no chance in a 2-hitter by John Fulgham
PITTSBURGH - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander John Fulgham. Pittsburgh found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. Fulgham (5-3) fanned 9 and walked 2, throwing 104 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Gary Roenicke provided Atlanta with the offense Fulgham needed as he finished 3 for 4, homering once, hitting a double, scoring two runs and driving in 4 runs. Atlanta improved its record to 29-15, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits.
Thursday 5/19/1983: Don Stanhouse blanks Texas with a 2-hitter
TEXAS - Toronto's right-hander Don Stanhouse is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. Stanhouse (4-0) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 109 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Jim Rice helped Stanhouse at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring twice. Toronto improved its record to 30-14, scoring 5 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 5/16/1983: Player of the Week honors go to Coleman and Cey
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston's Dave Coleman this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Dave pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .414 with 2 HR and 14 RBI while slugging .759. Coleman has hit 3 bombs this year while batting .261. He adds 8 doubles, along with 14 runs scored. Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman Ron Cey had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Ron was on fire, hitting .560 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. His season features a batting average of .290 (40 hits in 138 AB), 8 doubles, no triples and 6 homeruns. Cey collected 20 RBI and 20 runs as well.
Sunday 5/15/1983: Dave Coleman collects five hits against Oakland
OAKLAND - Dave Coleman hits 'em where they ain't. Oakland certainly agrees as Boston's third baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Chris Welsh. A two-run double off Kevin Kobel in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 4th inning he belted a RBI double off Catfish Hunter. He had singles in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 8th (two RBIs). Dave scored 2 runs, and he collected 10 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .261. The final score of the game was 26-2.
Saturday 5/14/1983: Ross Baumgarten out for 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia is without its left-hander Ross Baumgarten for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Glenn Hubbard in a game against Pittsburgh. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Baumgarten had suffered a Strained Elbow Ligament. His ERA of 3.18 helped him to a 2-1 record this year. He struck out 38 and walked 13 in 45.1 innings.
Thursday 5/12/1983: Mike Corkins (NYM) will miss 4-5 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s pitcher Mike Corkins was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 2nd inning of the game between New York (N) and St. Louis. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Corkins will miss about 4-5 weeks. Broken Hand was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 8 starts this year Mike struck out 39 batters in 48.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.77, his record 2-4. Mike has pitched one shutout and one complete game.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander Steve Shields suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Kansas City he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. Steve has a record of 1-1 this season, with an ERA of 4.41. In 32.2 Innings he was able to strike out 26 batters.
