Friday 7/1/1983: Kirkwood and Eckersley receive Pitcher of the Month award
Don Kirkwood couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 0.91 in 49.1 innings of work in which he struck out 20 hitters. His record in June is 5-0. Don pitched a shutout as well. In 17 starts this year Don struck out 57 batters in 135 innings of work. His ERA is 2.67, his record 10-5. He has 7 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 6th in the American League in wins! St. Louis' Dennis Eckersley had a terrific June, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 28 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 28 innings. His ERA in June was 0.66. Dennis also fired a shutout. His ERA of 1.40 helped him to a 11-4 record this year. He struck out 101 and walked 23 in 147.2 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Milwaukee's Robin Yount this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .469 and hit .410, while driving in 28 runs. His season features a batting average of .324 (95 hits in 293 AB), 14 doubles, 3 triples and 15 bombs. Yount collected 60 RBI and 47 runs as well. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman Willie Aikens had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He hit .320 with 27 RBI and slugged .770 in 100 at bats. Willie is hitting .302 this year, with 86 hits in 285 at bats. He has driven in 59 runs, slugging .642. Thursday 6/30/1983: Tom Hall pitches his 4th shutout of the season
TORONTO - California's lefty Tom Hall is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Toronto found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Hall 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 64th shutouts in his career. Hall (11-4) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 111 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' California's centerfielder George Foster stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hall. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Thursday 6/30/1983: California's Tom Hall wins #300
TORONTO - California's players had every reason to congratulate Tom Hall, who reached a milestone today, winning his 300th game! Hall allowed 0 earned runs while striking out 10 and walking 2 in 9 innings of work. He has enmassed 2913 K's in 4125 career innings so far, and posts a 2.51 lifetime ERA. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He has won 20 games 9 times in his career, setting a career high with 25 wins in 1971. The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.

PHILADELPHIA - It was a great day for Philadelphia's right-hander Mike Norris. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Montreal on Tuesday. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Norris (6-3) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 110 pitches. New York (A)'s pitcher David Clyde had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' second baseman Jorge Orta will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between St. Louis and San Diego. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Orta collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. St. Louis wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Orta had suffered a Torn Groin Muscle. Orta has hit 8 longballs this year while batting .266. He adds 16 doubles, along with 24 runs scored.

DETROIT - Detroit's Mike Easler suffered a serious injury Friday in a game against Cleveland. Easler fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. Broken Foot was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Easler has hit for a .272 average this season. He has 18 extra base hits along with 101 total bases, resulting in a .416 slugging percentage.
