Monday 7/11/1983: Detroit's Mura wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's pitcher Steve Mura had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Steve went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 5 in 14.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League's best player of the week was Philadelphia's Len Matuszek, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Matuszek helped his team with an average of .519 and 12 RBI in 27 at bats.
Saturday 7/9/1983: Hal McRae collects 2000th hit against Montreal
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's leftfielder Hal McRae already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. With one out in the 3rd inning, Hal drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Hal collected 192 homeruns and 1015 RBI in 16 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
Thursday 7/7/1983: Bob Knepper dominates Chicago (N), throws NO-HITTER
HOUSTON - Bob Knepper had some fun again. REAL fun. Chicago (N) hitters did not. Houston's lefty fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 182 games started. Larry Herndon spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 5th inning. Knepper (7-6) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 59 of 93 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' The hitting star for Houston was rightfielder Jesse Barfield, he went 2 for 4, hitting a double, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.

BALTIMORE - Minnesota's right-hander Don Sutton gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Sutton allowed 4 earned runs while striking out 9 and walking 2 in 9 innings of work. He has enmassed 3578 K's in 4242 career innings so far, and posts a 2.36 lifetime ERA. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He set a career high with 26 wins in 1974. Sutton won 20 or more games a season 8 times. The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.

MILWAUKEE - Paul Moskau had some fun again. Texas hitters did not. Milwaukee's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 136 games started. Moskau (7-1) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 76 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Joe Lis helped Moskau at the plate, he collected 1 hit in 1 trips to the plate, homering once, with 3 RBI. Milwaukee scored 4 runs on 13 hits.

TORONTO - Great days are rare. But not for Toronto's right-hander Bob Reynolds. Oakland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 37th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Reynolds (12-5) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 67 of 103 pitches for strikes. Jay Schlueter helped Reynolds at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, and collecting 3 RBI. Toronto scored 6 runs on 7 hits.
