Tuesday 7/19/1983: Mike Norris (PHI) will miss 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia is without its right-hander Mike Norris for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Kiko Garcia in a game against Montreal. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Norris was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Bicep Muscle. Mike has a record of 8-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.75. In 114.2 Innings he was able to strike out 58 batters. Mike has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games.
Monday 7/18/1983: Boston's Rice wins Player of the Week award
Boston's rightfielder Jim Rice had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Jim was on fire, hitting .462 with 2 HR and 4 RBI. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's shortstop Jack Brohamer. He hit .550 with 6 RBI and slugged 1.050 in 20 at bats.
Sunday 7/17/1983: Los Angeles (N)'s Kirk Gibson pounds five hits
SAN DIEGO - Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Kirk Gibson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up San Diego's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. Number 1 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 344 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A RBI double off Jeff Holly in the 6th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. He had singles in the 4th inning and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Kirk scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .335. The final score of the game was 11-4.
Wednesday 7/13/1983: Silvio Martinez out for 5-6 weeks
SAN DIEGO - When it rains, it pours. San Diego's ace Silvio Martinez will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Elbow Ligament. Silvio has a record of 8-6 this season, with an ERA of 2.51. In 150.2 Innings he was able to strike out 54 batters.
