Toronto's third baseman Hiromitsu Ochiai had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 23 at bats he hit .435 with 3 HR and 4 RBI. Ochiai has walked 41 times this year and posts a .329 OBP. While batting .248, 90 for 363, he has driven in 35 runs. St. Louis' shortstop Tim Raines Sr. had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Tim went 13 for 21 (.619), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 7 RBI. His season features a batting average of .275 (97 hits in 353 AB), 22 doubles, 9 triples and 5 longballs. Raines Sr. collected 37 RBI and 64 runs as well.
Saturday 7/23/1983: Jack Morris dominates San Francisco, gives up just one hit
SAN FRANCISCO - Jack Morris had some fun again. San Francisco hitters did not. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 173 games started. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Morris (9-8) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 64 of 99 pitches for strikes. Alan Trammell provided Philadelphia with the offense Morris needed as he went 4 for 6, homering once, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. Philadelphia scored 10 runs on 19 hits.
Thursday 7/21/1983: Dave Cheadle (CIN) will miss 5 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's ace Dave Cheadle suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Atlanta he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Cheadle was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 4.46 helped him to a 2-9 record this year. He struck out 96 and walked 32 in 107 innings.
