Wayne Cage wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Wayne went 12 for 19 (.632), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 11 RBI. This year Cage drove in 72 and scored 71 runs while batting .311 with 22 homeruns. He's 7th in the American League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! Johnny Bench wins his 8th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Johnny was on fire, hitting .368 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. Bench has hit for a .235 average this season. He has 41 extra base hits along with 151 total bases, resulting in a .398 slugging percentage.
Friday 8/5/1983: Ross Baumgarten (PHI) will miss 8 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's left-hander Ross Baumgarten will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Atlanta where he left the field in the 4th inning. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Baumgarten had suffered a Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Ross has a record of 3-3 this season, with an ERA of 4.13. In 80.2 Innings he was able to strike out 59 batters.
Friday 8/5/1983: Fred Breining out for 6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore is without its right-hander Fred Breining for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hideji Kato in a game against California. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Breining was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Breining compiled an ERA of 2.76, going 11-4 in 22 starts. He fanned 68 while giving up 121 hits in 130.2 innings.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Oakland's Lance Parrish this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Lance went 12 for 24 (.500), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 9 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Dave Winfield, San Diego's starting leftfielder. He hit .458 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.125 in 24 at bats. Dave is hitting .266 this year, with 101 hits in 380 at bats. He has driven in 57 runs, slugging .447.
Monday 8/1/1983: New York (A)'s Righetti earns Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is New York (A)'s Dave Righetti. He struck out 21 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 1-1 while pitching 21 innings. His ERA in July was 0.88. This season Righetti compiled an ERA of 3.27, going 7-7 in 22 starts. He fanned 84 while giving up 120 hits in 137.2 innings. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is St. Louis' Vern Ruhle. He went 5-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 1.07. He struck out 25 in 42 innings. It's the 1st time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Oakland's catcher Lance Parrish. Lance went 29 for 88 (.330), while hitting 7 HR and collecting 19 RBI. This year Parrish drove in 54 and scored 42 runs while batting .243 with 17 homeruns. Philadelphia's leftfielder Len Matuszek had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. In 78 at bats he hit .385 with 7 HR and 22 RBI. Len has gone 55 for 178 (.309) this season, hitting 10 homeruns and driving in 38 runs. He has scored 28 runs on his own.
Sunday 7/31/1983: Atlanta's Reggie Jackson gets milestone hit
ST. LOUIS - Atlanta's players had every reason to congratulate Reggie Jackson, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With one out in the 8th inning, Reggie drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1977 where he hit .301 with 57 homeruns and 137 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
