The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Kansas City's George Brett this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. George was on fire, hitting .480 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. His season numbers are: .332 AVG, 138 hits, 33 doubles, 4 triples and 20 taters, along with 92 RBI and 81 runs scored. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Montreal's Hiromitsu Kadota this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .476 with 16 RBI and slugged 1.095 in 21 at bats. Kadota has hit 17 taters this year while batting .264. He adds 12 doubles, along with 54 runs scored.
Wednesday 8/10/1983: Paul Hartzell pitches his 1st shutout of the season
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's right-hander Paul Hartzell is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Hartzell (3-1) fanned 2 and walked 1, throwing 110 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' The hitting star for Atlanta was third baseman Mark Brouhard, he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB. Atlanta improved its record to 82-31, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 8/8/1983: Don Gullett blanks St. Louis with a 2-hitter
ATLANTA - Atlanta's left-hander Don Gullett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking St. Louis on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 31st time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Gullett (13-8) fanned 3 and walked 2, throwing 89 pitches. Atlanta's third baseman Mark Brouhard got 1 hit in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gullett. The final score of the game was 6-0.
