Wednesday 9/14/1983: Mike Schmidt knocks lights out with three homeruns
PHILADELPHIA - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Philadelphia's third baseman Mike Schmidt accomplished that feat in a 7-5 win over Los Angeles (N). His 1st blast, a three-run homerun off Ray Searage in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 503 feet from home plate. It tied the ballgame at 3. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Ray Searage in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in right field. It tied the ballgame at 5. His 3rd shot, off Tom Henke in the 10th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. His final blast of the game capped his performance as it won the game, setting the crowd on fire! Overall he went 3 for 5, scoring three times and driving in 6 runs. Steve Balboni was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 8/26/1982.
Wednesday 9/14/1983: Gary Matthews Sr. (MIN) will miss 7-8 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's players were scared when they had to watch Gary Matthews Sr. suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against New York (A). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Matthews Sr. will probaby miss 7-8 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Matthews Sr. was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Rib Cage Muscle. This year Matthews Sr. drove in 50 and scored 48 runs while batting .227 with 13 taters.
Monday 9/12/1983: Jack Morris dominates Los Angeles (N), gives up just 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Jack Morris is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Morris (12-13) fanned 3 and walked 3, throwing 105 pitches. Philadelphia's second baseman Dave Cash got 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Morris. Philadelphia improved its record to 78-65, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 9/12/1983: New York (N)'s Swan wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's pitcher Dickie Noles. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! In 29 starts this year Dickie struck out 85 batters in 194.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.51, his record 9-11. He has 5 complete games and 3 shutouts. The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Craig Swan, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.13 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.

MONTREAL - New York (N)'s right-hander Craig Swan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 23rd time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Scott Fletcher singled with no outs in the 9th inning. Swan (17-9) fanned 3 and walked none, throwing 106 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Willie Upshaw helped Swan at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. New York (N) improved its record to 62-80, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.

CINCINNATI - Atlanta's southpaw Don Gullett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 32nd time he has done it in his career. With two outs in the 6th inning Dave Cheadle singled to break up the no-hitter. Gullett (18-8) fanned 1 and walked none, throwing 79 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Steve Yeager helped Gullett at the plate, he finished 1 for 3. Atlanta improved its record to 104-37, scoring 2 runs on 6 hits.
