Thursday 9/22/1983: Max Venable uncorks five hits against San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO - On Thursday, Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Max Venable displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against San Francisco, punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Bill Laskey in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in left field. Number 2 in the 4th inning accounted for a RBI double. A pitch from Rick Lysander in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He had singles in the 9th inning Max scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He is hitting .275 this season, with 4 HR and 32 RBI. Chicago (N) scored 14 runs on 14 hits.
Tuesday 9/20/1983: David Palmer (SFG) will miss 7 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - When it rains, it pours. San Francisco's right-hander David Palmer will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Houston where he left the field in the 4th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. In 16 starts this year David struck out 56 batters in 104.1 innings of work. His ERA is 7.07, his record 1-12.
Monday 9/19/1983: Dave Stieb pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Dave Stieb is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Stieb (10-8) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 72 of 109 pitches for strikes. Rich Coggins helped Stieb at the plate, he went 1 for 4, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. Toronto improved its record to 90-60, scoring 3 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 9/19/1983: Carter and Morris win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Gary Carter this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .435 with 10 RBI and slugged .913 in 23 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Philadelphia's Jack Morris this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Jack went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53, while fanning 8 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Friday 9/16/1983: Rafael Ramirez nabs five hits against Houston
ATLANTA - Rafael Ramirez punished Houston's pitching today, collecting five hits in 5 AB. That definitely helped Atlanta, they won the game 10 to 7. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a RBI double. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 347 feet, cleared the wall in right field. It tied the ballgame at 6. In the 6th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Mike Scott. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Rafael did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .352.
