Saturday 10/1/1983: Reynolds and Parker receive Pitcher of the Month award
Bob Reynolds couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 7 games in September, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.99 in 54.2 innings. Bob fanned 35 hitters. Bob pitched a shutout as well. This season Reynolds compiled an ERA of 2.45, going 21-9 in 35 starts. He fanned 150 while giving up 196 hits in 268.2 innings. Bob has pitched 2 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 6th in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! St. Louis' pitcher Harry Parker is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. The American League's best player of the month was Seattle's Gene Tenace, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He hit .420 with 19 RBI and slugged .670 in 100 at bats. Tenace has hit for a .342 average this season. He has 55 extra base hits along with 283 total bases, resulting in a .541 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 9th in RBI! Bob Horner of St. Louis wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He hit .311 with 19 RBI and slugged .667 in 90 at bats. This year Horner drove in 115 and scored 79 runs while batting .277 with 33 bombs. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Wednesday 9/28/1983: Bill Madlock has 2000th career hits
MONTREAL - San Diego's third baseman Bill Madlock already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 5th off Rick Austin for number 2000. Along with his 2000 hits, Bill collected 226 homeruns and 1015 RBI in 10 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.'
Wednesday 9/28/1983: Willie Hernandez out for 5 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its left-hander Willie Hernandez for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Glenn Wilson in a game against Pittsburgh. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Pulled Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Willie has a record of 2-2 this season, with an ERA of 2.90. In 90 Innings he was able to strike out 52 batters.
Tuesday 9/27/1983: Burt Hooton turns in great performance against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Houston's right-hander Burt Hooton is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. New York (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Hooton 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 15th shutouts in his career. Hooton (14-11) fanned 5 and walked 5, throwing 109 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Buddy Bell provided Houston with the offense Hooton needed as he finished 3 for 4, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring three runs and collecting 5 RBI. Houston scored 9 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 9/26/1983: Bobby Tolan stars with 2000th career hit
MONTREAL - Bobby Tolan got a standing ovation from 35659 fans in Montreal, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. In 13 years of big league action so far, Bobby has compiled a batting average of .287, along with 234 homeruns and 1027 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' He hit a single in the 9th off LaMarr Hoyt for number 2000.
Monday 9/26/1983: Chambliss and Lemon win Player of the Week award
Chris Chambliss wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Chambliss helped his team with an average of .538 and 5 RBI in 26 at bats. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia's centerfielder Chet Lemon. He had an on base percentage of .583 and hit .500, while driving in 15 runs.
Sunday 9/25/1983: Dusty Baker has 2000th career hits
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's players had every reason to congratulate Dusty Baker, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Dusty collected 192 homeruns and 933 RBI in 15 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' He hit a single in the 7th off Scott Sanderson for number 2000.

TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Dave Stewart is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Stewart (18-6) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 101 pitches. Toronto's Toronto scored 7 runs on 13 hits.
