Monday 4/25/1984: Oakland's Parrish wins Player of the Week award
Oakland's catcher Lance Parrish had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .440 with 8 RBI and slugged .960 in 25 at bats. Lance is hitting .333 this year, with 25 hits in 75 at bats. He has driven in 14 runs, slugging .640. Jon Matlack of Atlanta wins his 5th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Matlack was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56. Along the way he struck out 15 in 16 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 4/23/1984: Atlanta's Richards severely injured
ATLANTA - Atlanta's rightfielder Gene Richards suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Atlanta wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Richards had suffered a Torn Back Muscle. His season features a batting average of .180 (11 hits in 61 AB), 4 doubles, no triples and no longballs. Richards collected 5 RBI and 8 runs as well.
Friday 4/22/1984: Terry Leach (KCR) will miss 5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Terry Leach suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Texas he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Torn Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Leach compiled an ERA of 4.76, going 0-1 in 0 starts. He fanned 9 while giving up 11 hits in 11.1 innings.
Thursday 4/21/1984: Roy Smalley III on fire, hits for cycle
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s shortstop Roy Smalley III once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up San Francisco's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Thursday. His 1st hit was a RBI double off Steve Shirley in the 2nd inning. A single in the 3rd off Steve Shirley accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit was a two-run triple off Dan Larson in the 7th inning. His 4th hit, off Pat Perry in the 9th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Roy did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .255 this season, with 2 HR and 9 RBI. He's now the 61st player in league history to hit for the cycle! Claudell Washington was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/30/1983.
Monday 4/18/1984: Tom Hall turns in great performance against Detroit
CALIFORNIA - Tom Hall took the mound and never left. And Detroit hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 65 career shutouts in 532 games started. Hall (3-0) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 59 of 96 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Larvell Blanks provided California with the offense Hall needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. The final score of the game was 2-0.
