BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's right-hander Roger Clemens will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against California where he left the field in the 7th inning. Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .278 against Roger this season. While posting an ERA of 6.87 he went 2-6 in 10 starts, fanning 28 and walking 44 hitters.
Monday 5/23/1984: Staiger and Upshaw win Player of the Week award
Roy Staiger wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Roy went 9 for 20 (.450), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 10 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to New York (N)'s Willie Upshaw this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 26 at bats he hit .462 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. Willie has gone 46 for 158 (.291) this season, hitting 13 homeruns and driving in 32 runs. He has scored 31 runs on his own. He's 5th in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Friday 5/20/1984: San Francisco's Henderson out for 5-6 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's centerfielder Dave Henderson will miss at least 5-6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. His season numbers are: .242 AVG, 37 hits, 11 doubles, no triples and 4 homeruns, along with 19 RBI and 16 runs scored.
Friday 5/20/1984: Larry Anderson shuts out Baltimore on 2 hits
BALTIMORE - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Larry Anderson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Anderson (3-5) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. Terry Francona helped Anderson at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. Chicago (A) scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Wednesday 5/18/1984: Dave Winfield found the stroke, smashes three homers
CINCINNATI - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. San Diego's leftfielder Dave Winfield accomplished that feat in a 19-5 win over Cincinnati. Number 1 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 406 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Bob Stoddard in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from Dan Schatzeder in the 7th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 397 feet from home plate in left field. Overall he finished with 5 hits in 6 AB, scoring FOUR times and collecting 6 RBI. Johnny Ray was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 5/11/1984.
Monday 5/16/1984: St. Louis' Valenzuela wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's leftfielder Charlie Spikes had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Charlie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .519 with 0 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .778. He has hit 6 bombs while batting .326 this season. His 46 hits and 17 walks add up to a .400 on-base percentage. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI! Fernando Valenzuela of St. Louis wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.69 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/15/1984: Juan Eichelberger turns in great performance against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Juan Eichelberger took the mound and never left. And Minnesota hitters couldn't touch him at all. Milwaukee's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 131 games started. Eichelberger (6-3) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 72 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Robin Yount provided Milwaukee with the offense Eichelberger needed as he finished 2 for 4, homering once, doubling once, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. Milwaukee improved its record to 26-14, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits.
Wednesday 5/11/1984: Jim Bethke out for 4-5 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia is without its ace Jim Bethke for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ron Hodges in a game against St. Louis. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Bethke was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Manny Sarmiento in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 446 feet from home plate.
