Wednesday 6/1/1984: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
It's the 2nd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Boston's pitcher Tom Hausman. He struck out 11 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 11 innings. His ERA in May was 0.81. Tom pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .191 against Tom this season. While posting an ERA of 1.52 he went 8-2 in 11 starts, fanning 28 and walking 13 hitters. Tom has pitched 3 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Jon Matlack pitched like a legend in May, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. Wednesday 6/1/1984: Red hot Brett and Madlock win Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Kansas City's George Brett, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. George was on fire, hitting .412 with 6 homeruns and 18 RBI. His season features a batting average of .359 (70 hits in 195 AB), 18 doubles, 2 triples and 8 homeruns. Brett collected 31 RBI and 37 runs as well. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! It's the 5th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Diego's third baseman Bill Madlock. He had an on base percentage of .413 and hit .360, while driving in 21 runs. Tuesday 5/31/1984: Steve Mura turns in great performance against Boston
BOSTON - Detroit's right-hander Steve Mura is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Boston found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Mura 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. Mura (8-2) struck out 4 and issued 4 BB, throwing 57 of 98 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Gary Carter helped Mura at the plate, he got 3 hits in 6 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. Detroit improved its record to 37-18, scoring 10 runs on 17 hits.
Tuesday 5/31/1984: John Martin out for 5 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland is without its ace John Martin for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Keith Hernandez in a game against Milwaukee. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Martin compiled an ERA of 3.78, going 6-5 in 14 starts. He fanned 21 while giving up 108 hits in 97.2 innings. John has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
Monday 5/30/1984: Kansas City's Brett wins Player of the Week award
George Brett from Kansas City wins his 9th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 30 at bats he hit .567 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. Brett has hit 8 longballs this year while batting .372. He adds 18 doubles, along with 37 runs scored. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! St. Louis' shortstop Tim Raines Sr. had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Tim was on fire, hitting .444 with 3 HR and 4 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Saturday 5/28/1984: Pittsburgh has no chance in a 2-hitter by Dennis Lewallyn
ST. LOUIS - Dennis Lewallyn took the mound and never left. And Pittsburgh hitters couldn't touch him at all. St. Louis' right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 134 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Lewallyn (5-3) struck out 2 and issued 1 BB, throwing 65 of 108 pitches for strikes. Tim Raines Sr. helped Lewallyn at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, hitting a double. NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Craig Swan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. Swan (9-1) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 106 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' The hitting star for New York (N) was rightfielder Cesar Cedeno, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. New York (N) scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
Saturday 5/28/1984: Ron Robinson (DET) will miss 8-9 weeks
DETROIT - When it rains, it pours. Detroit's right-hander Ron Robinson will not pitch for at least 8-9 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Minnesota where he left the field in the 4th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Elbow which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .235 against Ron this season. While posting an ERA of 3.88 he went 3-3 in 8 starts, fanning 12 and walking 33 hitters. He has one complete game and one shutout.
Saturday 5/28/1984: Ed Hodge (MIN) will miss full season
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's lefty Ed Hodge experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 2nd inning of the game against Detroit, Hodge complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Disc Back. Opposing players hit .277 against Ed this season.
