Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Minnesota's John Denny. He started 6 games in June, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.72 in 50 innings. John fanned 34 hitters. John has a record of 13-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.00. In 130.2 Innings he was able to strike out 88 batters. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The best month of June in the National League certainly had Houston's right-hander Steve Busby, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. The American League's best player of the month was Seattle's Mike Easler, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. In 101 at bats he hit .366 with 6 HR and 26 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .413, Mike hit .346 and slugged .641. He has collected 79 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! It's the 5th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Francisco's first baseman Eddie Murray. Eddie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .361 with 6 and 27 RBI while slugging .639. Murray has hit for a .347 average this season. He has 31 extra base hits along with 156 total bases, resulting in a .547 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the National League in batting and 1st in RBI!
Monday 6/27/1984: Montreal's Jones wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Toronto's Gary Alexander this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Gary pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .478 with 3 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .957. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Randy Jones, one of Montreal's best starting pitchers. Jones was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 6 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 3.94 helped him to a 4-8 record this year. He struck out 34 and walked 27 in 82.1 innings. He has one complete game and one shutout.
Friday 6/24/1984: Tim Wallach (MON) will miss 6 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's third baseman Tim Wallach will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Pulled Achilles Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Wallach has hit one bomb this year while batting .195. He adds 14 doubles, along with 19 runs scored.
Thursday 6/23/1984: Atlanta's Reggie Jackson crushes homerun #500
HOUSTON - Reggie Jackson got a standing ovation from 31352 fans in Houston, who witnessed his historic 500th career homerun. The historic drive, a solo homerun off Bob Knepper in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 414 feet from home plate. Perhaps his best year so far was 1977 where he hit .301 with 57 homeruns and 137 RBI. Reggie hit 30+ homeruns in a season 9 times, hitting 40 bombs 6 times. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
Thursday 6/23/1984: Bill Castro out for 8 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Bill Castro suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Boston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Torn Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Castro compiled an ERA of 2.28, going 2-2 in 0 starts. He fanned 8 while giving up 45 hits in 47.1 innings.
Tuesday 6/21/1984: John Montefusco pitches 2-hit shutout against Baltimore
BOSTON - John Montefusco took the mound and never left. And Baltimore hitters couldn't touch him at all. Boston's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 306 games started. Montefusco (3-10) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 55 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' The hitting star for Boston was centerfielder Bill Sharp, he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, stroking a double. Boston scored 1 run on 4 hits.
Monday 6/20/1984: Grich (DET) and Orta (STL) win P.O.W. award
Detroit's designated hitter Bobby Grich had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .500 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.115 in 26 at bats. Grich has hit for a .267 average this season. He has 29 extra base hits along with 127 total bases, resulting in a .514 slugging percentage. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Jorge Orta, St. Louis' starting second baseman. He hit .526 with 5 RBI and slugged .737 in 19 at bats. Sunday 6/19/1984: St. Louis' Mike Davis slams five hits
SAN DIEGO - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Mike Davis after his 5 hit game, which St. Louis won 14-4 against San Diego. In the 4th inning he belted a two-run double off Alejandro Pena. A 452 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Scott Terry in the 5th inning. Number 4 in the 7th inning accounted for a double. He collected singles in the 2nd inning and in the 8th inning (two RBIs). Mike scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .262.
