Monday 7/11/1984: Cincinnati's Rainey severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Chuck Rainey will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against New York (N) on Monday. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Tricep Muscle. Chuck has a record of 3-2 this season, with an ERA of 5.53. In 53.2 Innings he was able to strike out 27 batters.
Monday 7/11/1984: Los Angeles (N)'s Pena out for 7 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s catcher Tony Pena will miss about 7 weeks after being knocked unconscious in a collision at home plate, in the 5th inning of the game between Los Angeles (N) and Atlanta. He was helped off the field after the incident. Pena will miss at least 7 weeks. Fractured Hand was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season features a batting average of .226 (38 hits in 168 AB), 9 doubles, one triple and 2 homeruns. Pena collected 26 RBI and 21 runs as well.

The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Steve McCatty, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. McCatty was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 5 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Jack Morris, one of Philadelphia's best starting pitchers. Morris was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.13. Along the way he struck out 13 in 16 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .223 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 2.58 he went 11-4 in 18 starts, fanning 76 and walking 45 hitters. Jack has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 9th in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Sunday 7/10/1984: Ken Brett blanks Oakland with a 2-hitter
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's left-hander Ken Brett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Brett (11-5) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 93 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Barry Foote provided Milwaukee with the offense Brett needed as he went 1 for 3. Milwaukee scored 1 run on 9 hits.
Thursday 7/7/1984: Jerry Augustine fires PERFECT GAME against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Jerry Augustine had some fun again. REAL fun. Pittsburgh hitters did not. New York (N)'s left-hander pitched a perfect game for his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 192 games started. The crowd of 18441 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. Augustine (8-5) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 4. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' New York (N)'s rightfielder Cesar Cedeno collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Augustine. New York (N) improved its record to 50-34, scoring 1 run on 6 hits.
