Saturday 7/30/1984: Gorman Thomas stars with 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (A) - Gorman Thomas got a standing ovation from 57803 fans in New York (A), who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Gorman collected 267 homeruns and 1192 RBI in 11 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' His hit in the 4th inning was a double off Oil Can Boyd.
Friday 7/29/1984: St. Louis' Tim Raines Sr. gets the cycle
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' shortstop Tim Raines Sr. once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Pittsburgh's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Friday. Number 1 in the 3rd inning accounted for a double. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Bret Saberhagen in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 375 feet from home plate. A triple off Tony Fossas in the 6th inning, accounted for his 3rd hit. A single in the 7th off Tony Fossas accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Tim did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 108 hits this season, accounting for a .271 batting average. 62 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Tim. Roy Smalley III was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/21/1984.
Wednesday 7/27/1984: Bob Dernier out for 9-10 weeks
TEXAS - Texas' players were scared when they had to watch Bob Dernier suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Oakland. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Dernier will probaby miss 9-10 weeks. Texas wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Dernier had suffered a Torn Rib Cage Muscle. Bob has gone 88 for 363 (.242) this season, hitting 2 homeruns and driving in 31 runs. He has scored 33 runs on his own.
