The American League Player of the Week award goes to Gorman Thomas, New York (A)'s starting designated hitter. Gorman was on fire, hitting .545 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Kirk Gibson had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Gibson helped his team with an average of .480 and 5 RBI in 25 at bats.
Tuesday 8/2/1984: Mike Cosgrove out for 8 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N) is without its left-hander Mike Cosgrove for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bill Almon in a game against San Diego. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Tricep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Mike struck out 5 batters in 21.1 innings of work. His ERA is 4.22, his record 4-2.

MINNESOTA - Detroit's right-hander Rob Dressler is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Dwight Evans doubled with two outs in the 5th inning. Dressler (15-5) fanned 2 and walked 1, throwing 108 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Detroit's rightfielder Andre Dawson got 1 hit in 3 AB, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Dressler. Detroit scored 1 run on 2 hits.

NEW YORK (A) - On Monday, New York (A)'s designated hitter Gorman Thomas displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Chicago (A), punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Roy Lee Jackson in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 467 feet from home plate. His 4th hit was a triple off Chip Lang in the 6th inning. A pitch from Rich Gossage in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 356 feet from home plate in right field. He had singles in the 1st (one RBI) and in the 4th inning . Gorman scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 69 hits in 200 at bats, resulting in a .345 batting average. New York (A) scored 18 runs on 22 hits.

TORONTO - Texas' right-hander Walt Terrell is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Toronto on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Terrell (4-5) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 104 pitches. Jerry Mumphrey helped Terrell at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. The American League Player of the Week award goes to Lance Parrish, Oakland's starting catcher. Lance was on fire, hitting .444 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. John has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. It's the 6th time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Don Gullett.
