NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Scott Sanderson is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Sanderson 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 9th shutouts in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Sanderson (14-7) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. New York (N)'s first baseman Floyd Rayford stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Sanderson. New York (N) improved its record to 71-46, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 8/15/1984: Detroit's Teufel wins Player of the Week award
Tim Teufel from Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .481 with 6 RBI and slugged .704 in 27 at bats. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Schmidt, Philadelphia's starting third baseman. Mike went 10 for 21 (.476), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Sunday 8/14/1984: Cleveland's Flanagan severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland is without its lefty Mike Flanagan for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Dwayne Murphy in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Flanagan was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Back Muscle. Opposing players hit .218 against Mike this season. While posting an ERA of 2.72 he went 11-6 in 25 starts, fanning 46 and walking 37 hitters. Mike has pitched 2 shutouts and 6 complete games.
Thursday 8/11/1984: Gene Tenace ropes 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (N) - Chicago (N)'s players had every reason to congratulate Gene Tenace, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1983 where he hit .343 with 24 homeruns and 98 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' With two outs in the 3rd inning, Gene drilled a three run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
