Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Minnesota's John Denny. His record of 3-2 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 42.2 innings of work he allowed just 22 hits while striking out 30, compiling an ERA of just 0.84. John has a record of 18-6 this season, with an ERA of 1.81. In 213.2 Innings he was able to strike out 141 batters. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! He's 7th in the American League in batting and 7th in RBI! It's the 3rd time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Francisco's leftfielder Jeffrey Leonard. Wednesday 8/31/1984: Ron Robinson blanks Toronto with a 1-hitter
TORONTO - Toronto's bats were sleeping, and Detroit's Ron Robinson gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just one hit in recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Robinson (5-3) struck out 5 and walked 6, throwing 69 of 128 pitches for strikes. Detroit's first baseman Richie Hebner collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, homering once, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Robinson. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Tuesday 8/30/1984: Terry Harper (SEA) will miss full season
SEATTLE - Seattle's rightfielder Terry Harper suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Back Muscle which will require surgery. Terry is hitting .240 this year, with 105 hits in 438 at bats. He has driven in 56 runs, slugging .340.
Monday 8/29/1984: New York (N)'s Swan wins Player of the Week award
Julio Cruz from Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Julio was on fire, hitting .600 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. Craig Swan of New York (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Craig went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.62, while fanning 16 in 16.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 8/27/1984: Gene Clines punishes Pittsburgh with six hits
PITTSBURGH - Montreal's shortstop Gene Clines once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Pittsburgh's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Saturday. A RBI double off Bret Saberhagen in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Bret Saberhagen in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 346 feet from home plate in left field. His 5th hit was a double off John Pacella in the 7th inning. He had singles in the 4th (one RBI) , in the 6th inning and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Gene scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! His 6 hit performance increases his batting average to .272. Montreal improved its record to 51-78, scoring 15 runs on 21 hits.
Thursday 8/25/1984: Jeff Burroughs stars with 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' leftfielder Jeff Burroughs was in good mood after the game against Chicago (N), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1981 where he hit .342 with 25 homeruns and 95 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' With two outs in the 5th inning, Jeff drilled a double, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Wednesday 8/24/1984: Dennis Eckersley dominates Chicago (N), gives up just one hit
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Dennis Eckersley is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (N) on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 17th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Eckersley (12-8) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 67 of 105 pitches for strikes. Jack Clark helped Eckersley at the plate, he collected 1 hit in 2 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun. St. Louis improved its record to 84-41, scoring 1 run on 2 hits.
