How Much Bad Luck Can You Have?
Even though the Boston Red Sox are currently sitting at 64-68 with a month or so left in the year, the team and the fans already have reasons to believe next season will be much better. This year was marred by injuries and under-performing talented players, and the team is looking to next year as the year they finally get back to the playoffs, which have eluded the Boston club since their 105 - 57 campaign in 1979, which feels like a lifetime ago to the rabid fanbase.

Injuries killed a lot of the momentum of the early campaign for the Sox this year. Star CF Fred Lynn was injured on April 3rd, and spent over 2 months on the disabled list to start the year, leaving a gigantic hole in the middle of the Boston lineup. Since returning from injury, Lynn has posted .303/.384/.471 slashline in 59 games, with a stellar 26 walks to 24 strikeouts, and 20 extra base hits, including 12 doubles. Roger Clemens started his rookie campaign with a decent showing, going 2-2 with a 4.41 ERA in April. But in May it became apparent something wasn't right, as the rookie flamethrower struggled mightily, going 0-5 with a 10.08 ERA in 25 innings. The team diagnosed him with an inflamed rotator cuff on May 24th, and he too spent over two months on the DL. Since coming back, he struggled somewhat to get back into things in July with a 6.67 ERA. He's settled down since though, going 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in August. These two injuries along may have been enough to swing the team 10+ wins or more and the injury bug wasn't the only issue that Boston dealt with this season.
