The Dodgers entered the season with just 1 pick before the end of the 3rd round this year, having traded their late 2nd round selection to Texas in the deal that brought reliever Kevin Hickey to LA. They also got back a late 3rd in the deal, basically dropping a round.
As a result, they entered the offseason owning pick 24 in the first round and picks 22 and 24 in the 3rd round.
Coveting a second round pick, the Dodgers decided to trade underrated SS Rick Down to Toronto for their 2nd round pick, 15th in the round and 41st overall. Acquired on the trade deadline in 1982, Down did not get much playing time for the Dodgers that season. However, he blossomed when given more time, becoming a key component of the Dodgers success on their 83 championship squad as well as a very good 84 team.
Over those 2 seasons, Down posted a .321, .380, .459 triple slash line with 21 2b, 2 3b, 16 hr, 78 rbi, 11 sb, with 51 bb and just 32 k over 530 ab in basically 1 full season with gold glove caliber defense at SS, 3B, and RF.
That gave the Dodgers a second round pick back.
As their first round pick drew closer, there was a single player remaining that management valued above the rest - 18 year old reliever Jeff "Nellie" Nelson. As the 20th pick sat on the board management felt it was very unlikely that Nelson would get past the Yankees at 21, and that if he somehow did there was virtually no chance he got past Atlanta at 22. Simply put, he was not going to last until pick 24. If they didnt want to narrowly miss out on a guy that was so close, a move up likely needed to be made. Management got approval from ownership and promptly rang up Philly GM Nick Kolupanowich to make an aggressive offer for their pick 20, which was on the clock. After talking, it was agreed that Philly would send pick 20 and career minor league reliever Dennis Kinney for 4 prospects - SP's Rob Woodward and John Habyan as well as MR's Karl Best and Dave Shipanoff.Woodward was a consensus top 40 prospect and Best had a cup of coffee with the Dodgers in '84. Shipanoff was a talented arm ready for a crack at the majors while Habyan was a bit off yet. The club was able to consolidate 3 guys who were ready for the majors but without a spot in LA due to the depth the club had and put them with another prospect for the opportunity to acquire pick 20 and draft Nelson.
That ended up giving the Dodgers all the picks they would have in '85 - picks 20 and 24 in round 1, pick 15 in round 2, and picks 22 and 24 in round 3.
