Philadelphia's rightfielder Tony Phillips will miss about 5 weeks after being hit by Mark Langston in the 1st inning of the game between Philadelphia and Chicago (N). Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Hand which will require surgery. Phillips has hit for a .220 average this season. Friday 5/6/1985: Doyle Alexander pitches 2-hit shutout against Oakland
OAKLAND - Texas' right-hander Doyle Alexander is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Alexander (5-2) fanned 1 and walked 1, throwing 88 pitches. Texas' third baseman Steve Macko stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Alexander. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Thursday 5/5/1985: Buddy Bell out for 5 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's Buddy Bell suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against Philadelphia. Bell fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. This year Bell drove in 14 and scored 11 runs while batting .204 with 2 bombs.
Monday 5/2/1985: Hearn and Murray win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Ed Hearn this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .588 with 4 RBI and slugged .824 in 17 at bats. Montreal's first baseman Eddie Murray had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. BOSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Boston's right-hander J.R. Richard. Chicago (A) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Steve Brye singled with two outs in the 8th inning. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Richard (2-1) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 117 pitches. Jim Rice helped Richard at the plate, he went 3 for 5, with 2 RBI. Boston scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 5/1/1985: Soto (CLE) and Arroyo (HOU) win monthly pitcher award
Cleveland's pitcher Mario Soto is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He struck out 31 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 31 innings. His ERA in April was 1.57. The best month of April in the National League certainly had Houston's right-hander Fernando Arroyo, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. Thursday 4/28/1985: St. Louis' Valenzuela severely injured
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis is without its lefty Fernando Valenzuela for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jeffrey Leonard in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' season took a blow when Jack Clark suffered a serious injury in the game against Atlanta. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Clark will probaby miss 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Clark was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Tricep Muscle. Clark has hit 4 homeruns this year while batting .350.
