KANSAS CITY - Great days are rare. But not for Kansas City's left-hander Ken Brett. California found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Brett (4-3) struck out 7 and issued 3 BB, throwing 68 of 110 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Kansas City was catcher Mike Diaz, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring twice with 4 RBI. Kansas City improved its record to 21-20, scoring 6 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 5/16/1985: Detroit's Spikes wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Charlie Spikes, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Charlie was on fire, hitting .500 with 1 HR and 8 RBI. Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman Willie Aikens had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Willie was on fire, hitting .409 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. Willie has gone 26 for 99 (.263) this season, hitting 5 bombs and driving in 19 runs. He has scored 19 runs on his own.
Saturday 5/14/1985: Mark Langston (CHN) will miss 8 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s lefty Mark Langston suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against New York (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Herniated Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Langston compiled an ERA of 5.96, going 2-3 in 8 starts. He fanned 23 while giving up 47 hits in 45.1 innings.
Friday 5/13/1985: Britt Burns pitches 2-hit shutout against Chicago (A)
TEXAS - Chicago (A)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Texas' Britt Burns didn't help them. The left-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Burns (1-6) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 62 of 113 pitches for strikes. Texas' designated hitter Rennie Stennett finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Burns. The final score of the game was 4-0.

CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Don Kirkwood suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Boston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Don has a record of 2-4 this season, with an ERA of 4.11. In 57 Innings he was able to strike out 20 batters.

NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s season has taken a hit after one of their best players, leftfielder Willie Upshaw, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 8 weeks. Upshaw was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament.
