MLB TRADE RUMORS
May 25th:
Twins Expected to Extend Randolph, Kirby and Denny:
2:02pm: According to industry sources, the extension for Ace Starting Pitcher John Denny will be for 7 years at about 10 million per season. The 32 year old Denny has been a Twin for his entire major league career after being taken 13th overall by the Mets in the 1970 amateur draft. The Twins acquired him for First Baseman Dave Kingman in the same season. Denny had expressed an interest in staying with the organization and now he'll get the chance. While the contract does carry some risk for his age 36 to 40 seasons, it's hard to argue with the team for locking up the one-time All Star and Cy Young Award winner. Denny is having another fantastic season, as he's currently 7-1 in 10 starts with an ERA of 1.70. He has 51 strikeouts in 74 IP.
11:38am: Minnesota wasn't sure that they'd be able to re-sign Kirby due to his present 16 million dollar contract. According to Paul SarDeliac of the St. Paul Herald Tribune, Kirby informed the team that he wanted an extension and informed them that if they gave him a multi-year extension that he'd be willing to take a lower contract than his current one. While neither camp has said exactly how much the extension will be for, it's rumored to be in the 4 year/ 24 million dollar range and will take him through his age 41 season. Kirby is 3-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 10 starts this season.
9:15am: Shortstop Willie Randolph will receive a 4 year extension at a value of approximately 5 million per season. The contact will total about 20 million that will take him through his age 34 season. The Twins are expected to announce the signing in the next few days. The 1978 AL Rookie of the Year and 1981 All-Star is a career .311 hitter with 566 stolen bases who provides Gold-Glove caliber defense and is one of the most popular and respected members of the clubhouse and is a team leader.
The team is also reportedly working on a possible extension with backup SS Gene Clines and are thought to be interested in extending struggling Center Fielder Brett Butler.
