The Blue Jays continued their string of rebuilding moves on Thursday night, sending power hitting catcher Garry Alexander and recently acquired young closer Mark Eichhorn to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a package of four prospects. LA immediately flipped Alexander to Atlanta for two prospects and a first-round pick, essentially turning the deal into a three-team trade.
Alexander, a 32-year-old catcher, has played parts of seven seasons with the Blue Jays and smacked a total of 107 home runs in that time-span with a .711 OPS. His best season came a year ago, as he slashed .257/.347/.461. Eichhorn, a 24-year-old closer, was a major piece coming back in the Ernie Camacho blockbuster trade with Boston in the middle of May, and had pitched well over a calendar month with Toronto after a rough start to the season with the Red Sox.
Headlining the return for the Blue Jays is 24-year-old starting pitcher Al Lachowitz. Lachowitz is ranked as the 67th best prospect in baseball by Baseball Prospectus, and has gotten his first taste of AAA in 1985, racking up a 4.86 ERA in 12 starts. Also included in the package are 25-year-old defensive wizard Randy Ready, pitching prospect Todd Worrell, and 20-year-old center fielder Roberto Kelly.
Going from the Braves to the Dodgers in the deal are Atlanta’s 1986 first-round pick as well as their first-round selection from the 1985 draft, starting pitching prospect Joe Magrane, and outfielders Cecil Espy.
