It's been an eventful season in St Louis so far. Between injuries, some long bus rides and a couple of trades.
On the injury front, 3rd year pitching sensation Fernando Valenzuela was poised to have a breakout season, but that was interrupted by a 6-7 week stint on the DL. "I felt great to start the season, even better than I had in past seasons," Valenzuela said, "I guess I just pushed too much. And then I did again in the recovery process slowing my healing. I'm a competitor. I just want to pitch." His first game back from the nearly 2 month absence he picked up where he left off, earning player of the game honors after tossing 7 innings of 5 hit ball against NL West Powerhouse LA Dodgers. The Cardinals dodged a bullet earlier this season as well when Jack Clark strained a muscle, they feared it was worse at the time. All the Birds had to do was rearrange the defense, moving Clark to first to they could limit the throwing compared to what he would have had at 3B.
The shuttle between Louisville and St Louis has been a little busy. Omar Moreno, Reggie Jackson, Rick Austin, Rich Gedman, Al Bumbry, Steve Garvey and Mike Garman have all spent time on the big league roster as well as AAA Louisville. "We're really just trying to find a roster that clicks and wins some games. We took a shot on some older vet players in FA hoping to strike lightning in a bottle, and none of them have had much lightning," said Cards GM Matthew Carpenter. "We're constantly trying to find something to get the offense clicking. We've also given thought to possibly moving fences again, but we realize that will effect our pitching staff as well as the offense, so it's a fine line we're walking.
Finally there are a couple of new faces from outside the organization: Sixto Lezcano and Dan Whitmer. "We're constantly checking teams and trade blocks for players that we think might be out there for trade that fits our needs and doesn't break the bank. Adding 2 hitters of Sixto and Dan's talents hopefully will help the offense. We didn't like sending young Catcher Rich Gedman back to AAA, but he can hopefully develop the power he's shown in spurts as well as possibly making himself more versatile for the future for our team."
Hopefully the Cardinal offense wakes up and the pitching staff keeps improving and there will be more post-season baseball for the "Best Fans in Baseball" the year in Baseball Heaven!!
