Friday 7/1/1985: Los Angeles (N)'s Calhoun named Pitcher of the Month
Milwaukee's Steve Shields had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 50 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 50 innings. His ERA in June was 0.46. Steve has a record of 9-1 this season, with an ERA of 1.76. In 127.2 Innings he was able to strike out 125 batters. Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Jeff Calhoun is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. He struck out 21 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 3-1 while pitching 21 innings. His ERA in June was 0.75. Jeff also fired a shutout. He's 8th in the American League in batting! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Mookie Wilson, New York (N)'s starting centerfielder. Monday 6/27/1985: New York (N)'s Balboni wins Player of the Week award
Ramon Aviles wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ramon was on fire, hitting .360 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. He has hit 11 bombs while batting .269 this season. His 75 hits and 34 walks add up to a .345 on-base percentage. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to New York (N)'s Steve Balboni this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Saturday 6/25/1985: Mel Hall (KCR) will miss 9 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's centerfielder Mel Hall hurt himself in the 9th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Mel Hall will miss at least 9 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Hall was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Dislocated Shoulder. This year Hall drove in 24 and scored 18 runs while batting .364 with 2 longballs.
Friday 6/24/1985: Cincinnati's Rowland severely injured
CINCINNATI - When it rains, it pours. Cincinnati's right-hander Mike Rowland will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 6th inning. Rowland was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 0 starts this year Mike struck out 42 batters in 34.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.36, his record 1-2.
