Monday 7/25/1985: Kansas City's Brett wins Player of the Week award
It's the 10th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Kansas City's third baseman George Brett. George went 12 for 26 (.462), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 7 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Montreal's catcher Steve Christmas had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Steve went 10 for 19 (.526), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 5 RBI.
Sunday 7/24/1985: Los Angeles (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Jon Matlack
ATLANTA - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's lefty Jon Matlack. Los Angeles (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. Ernie Whitt spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he tripled with no outs in the 8th inning. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Matlack (9-5) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 122 pitches. Atlanta's centerfielder Dale Murphy finished 1 for 4, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Matlack. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Saturday 7/23/1985: Randy Jones blanks Detroit with a 2-hitter
DETROIT - Randy Jones took the mound and never left. And Detroit hitters couldn't touch him at all. Kansas City's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 265 games started. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Jones (10-5) struck out 2 and issued 5 BB, throwing 83 of 139 pitches for strikes. Lorenzo Gray helped Jones at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate. Kansas City scored 6 runs on 15 hits.
