Saturday 7/30/1985: Don Gullett blanks Los Angeles (N) with a 1-hitter
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s left-hander Don Gullett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 39th time he has done it in his career. Gullett (13-3) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 64 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' New York (N)'s second baseman Johnny Ray finished 1 for 4, hitting a double, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gullett. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Friday 7/29/1985: Jeff Calhoun dominates New York (N), throws NO-HITTER
NEW YORK (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Jeff Calhoun made some history today, firing a no-hitter against New York (N). Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Ron Kittle spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 5th inning. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Calhoun (14-3) fanned 8 and walked 3, throwing 126 pitches. Ernie Whitt helped Calhoun at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, and driving in 2 runs. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 67-36, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
