It's the 9th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's first baseman Cecil Cooper. He hit .524 with 6 RBI and slugged 1.143 in 21 at bats. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s centerfielder Brian Greer. He hit .524 with 9 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 21 at bats. Brian has gone 117 for 376 (.311) this season, hitting 10 bombs and driving in 65 runs. He has scored 64 runs on his own. He's 3rd in the National League in batting and 6th in RBI!
Friday 8/5/1985: New York (A)'s Garrelts out for 8 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its right-hander Scott Garrelts for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Butch Wynegar in a game against California. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Herniated Disc Back. In 22 starts this year Scott struck out 71 batters in 127 innings of work. His ERA is 3.61, his record 8-5.
Thursday 8/4/1985: Jimmy Key shuts out Houston on one hit
CINCINNATI - It was a great day for Cincinnati's lefty Jimmy Key. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Houston on Thursday. Carney Lansford spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 9th inning. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Key (3-13) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. Marvell Wynne helped Key at the plate, he finished 2 for 4. Cincinnati scored 1 run on 5 hits.
Tuesday 8/2/1985: Chicago (A)'s Brye severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Steve Brye suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Brye was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Disc Back. Steve is hitting .222 this year, with 69 hits in 311 at bats. He has driven in 50 runs, slugging .386.
Monday 8/1/1985: Player of the Week honors go to Collins and Gullett
Milwaukee's centerfielder Dave Collins had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .621 and hit .560, while driving in 5 runs. Collins has hit for a .300 average this season. He has 23 extra base hits along with 155 total bases, resulting in a .387 slugging percentage. New York (N)'s pitcher Don Gullett had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week.
