SAN DIEGO - When it rains, it pours. San Diego's right-hander Joaquin Andujar will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 5th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 5.77 helped him to a 5-17 record this year. He struck out 73 and walked 65 in 163.2 innings.
Tuesday 9/13/1985: Seattle's Mike Easler goes deep three times
SEATTLE - Mike Easler was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Seattle to a 12-3 win over Milwaukee by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Juan Eichelberger in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 329 feet from home plate. A 383 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Gary Lavelle in the 2nd inning. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 364 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Overall he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three runs with 3 RBI. So far this season he is batting .334 with 27 homers and 113 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! Bill Madlock was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/9/1985.
Tuesday 9/13/1985: Baltimore's Breining out for full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's right-hander Fred Breining experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 5th inning of the game against Texas, Breining complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Back Muscle. In 34 starts this year Fred struck out 124 batters in 195.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.42, his record 11-16.
Monday 9/12/1985: Hideji Kato stars with 2000th career hit
CALIFORNIA - California's players had every reason to congratulate Hideji Kato, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1979 where he hit .283 with 31 homeruns and 112 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' With two outs in the 6th inning, Hideji drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Monday 9/12/1985: Madlock and Cedeno win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Seattle's Bill Madlock this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 27 at bats he hit .407 with 4 HR and 16 RBI. This year Madlock drove in 110 and scored 118 runs while batting .310 with 24 homeruns. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 8th in homeruns! New York (N)'s rightfielder Cesar Cedeno had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Cesar went 15 for 26 (.577), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. His season numbers are: .288 AVG, 153 hits, 35 doubles, 8 triples and 16 taters, along with 73 RBI and 89 runs scored.
Saturday 9/10/1985: Cesar Cedeno punishes San Francisco with six hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Cesar Cedeno led New York (N) to a 15-1 win over San Francisco by squeezing six hits out of his bat. Number 5 in the 7th inning accounted for a double. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 2nd (two RBIs) , in the 4th inning , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 9th (one RBI). Cesar scored one run, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 150 hits this season, accounting for a .285 batting average.
Friday 9/9/1985: Rick Sutcliffe out for 4-5 weeks
MONTREAL - When it rains, it pours. Montreal's right-hander Rick Sutcliffe will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Atlanta where he left the field in the 4th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Bicep Muscle. Rick has a record of 13-13 this season, with an ERA of 3.73. In 209.2 Innings he was able to strike out 196 batters. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.

TEXAS - Bill Madlock powered Seattle to a 18-8 win over Texas. He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Teddy Higuera in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 427 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Teddy Higuera in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from Lary Sorensen in the 9th inning left his bat for a GRAND SLAM, landing 399 feet from home plate in right-center. Bill finished with 4 hits in 6 AB, scoring FOUR times and driving in 7 runs. Joe Charboneau was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 8/19/1985.
