Wednesday 9/21/1985: Britt Burns shuts out Toronto on 2 hits
TEXAS - Texas' left-hander Britt Burns is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Toronto found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Burns 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 4th shutouts in his career. Burns (5-22) fanned 7 and walked 2, throwing 99 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Texas' designated hitter Albert Hall finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Burns. Texas scored 1 run on 4 hits.
Monday 9/19/1985: Houston's Lloyd Moseby hits for the cycle
HOUSTON - Lloyd Moseby hits 'em where they ain't. Los Angeles (N) certainly agrees as Houston's centerfielder unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A single in the 1st off Roy J. Thomas accounted for his 1st hit. A double off Roy J. Thomas in the 3rd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit was a triple off Mark Eichhorn in the 5th inning. A 418 foot drive to right-center marked his 4th hit, a solo homerun off Jesse Orosco in the 7th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Lloyd scored 4 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He is hitting .274 this season, with 16 HR and 86 RBI. He becomes the 66th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Johnny Bench was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 9/16/1985.
Monday 9/19/1985: Cesar Cedeno has 2000th career hits
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s players had every reason to congratulate Cesar Cedeno, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 12th inning was a single off John Pacella. Along with his 2000 hits, Cesar collected 230 homeruns and 893 RBI in 12 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.'
Monday 9/19/1985: Easler (SEA) and Lemon (PHI) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Easler, Seattle's starting third baseman. In 23 at bats he hit .391 with 4 HR and 6 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .414, Mike hit .333 and slugged .559. He has collected 116 runs batted in this year. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Chet Lemon wins his 6th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 22 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. This year Lemon drove in 87 and scored 77 runs while batting .258 with 24 longballs. He's 7th in the National League in RBIs and 10th in homeruns!
Sunday 9/18/1985: 5-hit performance by Houston's Rickey Henderson
ST. LOUIS - Houston's leftfielder Rickey Henderson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up St. Louis' pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a RBI double. In the 7th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Doug Bair. A 437 foot drive to left field marked his 5th hit, a solo homerun off Doug Jones in the 9th inning. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 5th . Rickey did drive in 2 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .234. Houston improved its record to 82-68, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits.
Friday 9/16/1985: Los Angeles (N)'s Henke severely injured
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N) is without its right-hander Tom Henke for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Marvell Wynne in a game against Cincinnati. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Bicep Tendon which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .203 against Tom this season. While posting an ERA of 2.23 he went 13-6 in 30 starts, fanning 192 and walking 36 hitters.
Friday 9/16/1985: Houston's Johnny Bench gets the cycle
PITTSBURGH - Johnny Bench is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A 426 foot drive to center field marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Danny Cox in the 1st inning. A pitch from Danny Cox in the 5th inning left his bat for a triple. A double off John Pacella in the 8th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A single in the 9th off Bill Dawley accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Johnny scored 2 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He is hitting .245 this season, with 16 HR and 75 RBI. He becomes the 65th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 6/12/1985, Andres Galarraga was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Friday 9/16/1985: Minnesota's Grich severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's second baseman Bobby Grich hurt himself in the 6th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Bobby Grich will miss at least 4-5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Grich was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Bicep Muscle. This year Grich drove in 75 and scored 81 runs while batting .266 with 20 taters.
Friday 9/16/1985: Jim Gott fires NO-NO against Chicago (A)
CHICAGO (A) - Baltimore's right-hander Jim Gott made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Chicago (A). Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Gott (9-16) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 119 pitches. Jim Eppard provided Baltimore with the offense Gott needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 13-0.
